Is it time to buy a new (or first) microwave? Looking at all the options can be overwhelming at first, but with a few tips you can narrow your choices to choose the right microwave for your kitchen.
Here’s what you need to know about the types and features in modern microwaves:
5 Types of microwaves
1. Countertop:
These are usually the most portable and least expensive of all microwaves. Installation is easy as you just plug them into a standard wall outlet. The downside is it will take up counter space and often doesn’t have as many advanced features.
2. Over-the-Range:
These convenient microwaves are installed directly over your oven or stovetop, saving precious counter space. These units are often larger with additional advanced features that basic countertop models don’t have. As a bonus, over-the-range microwaves include a vent to suck fumes from your stovetop.
3. Built-in:
These models blend into your cabinetry and go great with a built-in wall oven. You’ll find these more expensive than other models, and the space requirements must be exact for the best fit.
4. Convection:
A convection microwave is a different cooking style from other microwaves. They use a fan to distribute the heat better and cook your food faster. This cooking style often produces more flavourful food, but it costs more, and it can be easier to burn your food if you’re not paying attention.
5. Drawer:
Some microwaves are built into your cabinetry and slide out like a drawer. These are great for freeing up countertop space and making a microwave more accessible to the vertically challenged or those with mobility issues.
Once you’ve picked the type of microwave you think you want, it’s time to choose one from the hundreds of models on the market.
How to choose the right microwave
Choosing the right microwave for your home involves many considerations:
Your kitchen style:
Do you have stainless steel appliances? Are they all the same brand? Look at the style and manufacturer of your other kitchen appliances and ensure your microwave will fit in. If you have all stainless steel appliances, then you go buy a matte black microwave, it may not look cohesive.
Microwave location:
Where do you use the microwave? Is it convenient to have it near your fridge for quick reheating of leftovers, or would you rather use that space for food prep and place your microwave on a side table on the other side of your kitchen. The placement of your microwave may inform the type you choose.
Check dimensions:
Always measure the space before you buy any appliance. Whether it’s a countertop model, built-in, or over-the-range, measure the space you have and the distance to your power outlet to avoid ugly powercords where they don’t need to be.
Consider the wattage:
Microwaves come in different wattages. The higher the wattage, the faster food will cook. Look for one at least 1000 watts.
Brand reliability:
Read reviews on the manufacturer and model you’re considering. Look for one with more favourable reviews if possible, but remember to take all reviews with a grain of salt, as everyone’s experience will be slightly different. A good bet may be to narrow your microwave choices to 2-3 that you like and get an expert opinion from your local West Coast Appliance specialist.
Price matters:
Price is also a likely factor for your microwave. If it’s an appliance you plan to use daily (or many times daily), consider investing a little more to get a more reliable model with more features that you’d use. Balance the price with the features you want.
Settings:
You can get a basic microwave with just a timer, but why not invest in one with pre-programmed features, like defrosting, popcorn, or butter melting. These may seem a luxury for some, but having these features available can help you avoid burning specific foods and better manage cooking or reheating time.
Noise level:
If noise output matters, get a demo of the microwave you plan to buy first. Most are pretty quiet, especially in a busy kitchen, but some are louder.
Ventilation availability:
Do you plan to have your microwave above your oven or range top? Then choose a microwave with a built-in vent to vent cooking fumes and smells.
Modern Microwave features
Microwaves have come a long way from a simple timer being the only feature. Today, they include many handy settings and features. Here are some of our favourites:
Child lock : Some come with a child lock feature you can activate to prevent children (or unwanted guests) from turning on the microwave. This is an important safety feature to avoid your child placing a metal toy in the microwave and sparking a fire.
Steamer : Some microwaves include built-in steamer functionality to safely steam your veggies and foods.
Easy Cleaning features : Microwaves get dirty pretty quickly. Look for one with easy cleaning features like easily removable parts and smooth surfaces. (hint: whenever possible, cook with a cover over your food to minimize splashes and food explosions)
Pre-set cooking times : Need popcorn in a hurry? Press the popcorn button, and microwaves with this feature will automatically cook your popcorn to perfection. All by pressing just one button.
Sensors : Internal sensors in the microwave can sense cooking steam and adjust cook time and temperature if needed.
Wifi enabled : Like many kitchen appliances, you can find a microwave that is wifi enabled to send you a mobile alert when your food is done.
